• Some Information about Isaiah

• The name “Isaiah” means “the salvation of Jehovah” (from Hebrew Yeshyahu).
• The son of Amoz (Isa. 1:1; 2:1), who was apparently a man of humble rank. His wife was called ”the prophetess” (Isa. 8:3), either because she was endowed with the prophetic gift, like Deborah (Judg. 4:4) and Huldah (2 Kings 22:14-20), or simply because she was the wife of “the prophet” (Isa. 38:1). He had two sons, who bore symbolical names.
• He exercised the functions of his office during the reigns of Uzziah (or Azariah), Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah (Isa. 1:1), and possibly Manasseh .

• Some Information about the Book of Isaiah

• The book is divided into Part 1 (Chapters 1-39) and Part 2 (Chapters 40-66).
• The chapter divisions commonly used today were developed by Stephen Langton, an Archbishop of Canterbury. Langton put the modern chapter divisions into place in around A.D. 1227. The Wycliffe English Bible of 1382 was the first Bible to use this chapter pattern. Since the Wycliffe Bible, nearly all Bible translations have followed Langton’s chapter divisions.
• Perhaps coincidentally, Isaiah contains 66 chapters; the Bible contains 66 books.
• Part 1 of Isaiah contains 39 chapters; the Old Testament contains 39 books.
